Age spots, sometimes called liver spots, are areas of darker skin that often look like large dark freckles. They are normally caused by long term sun damage, but occasionally can be caused by bruising that leaves behind pigment from the blood. Most age spots appear on aging hands, but they can appear on any part of the body that is exposed to the sun such as the face, neck, arms, and back.
Dr. Rivkin has three non-invasive methods for getting rid of age spots.
Fraxel Laser Treatment (Fractional Laser Resurfacing)
Rather than taking off the entire outer layer of skin, as ablative laser resurfacing does, Fraxel skin resurfacing targets and destroys microscopic areas while leaving the cells surrounding the destroyed area healthy and unharmed. This allows for quick healing and reduced pain. Several sessions are required, typically two to four treatments spaced about three to four weeks apart. This gradual process is safer and healthier for your skin.
Westside Aesthetics now has the Fraxel II (SR1500) laser – an upgraded version of the original Fraxel. The Fraxel SR1500 does not require blue dye and the treatments give better results with less downtime.
This is a painless, non-invasive therapy, which destroys the dark spots without damaging the surrounding tissue, and involving no significant swelling or recovery time. The IPL device sends light through the skin. This light is absorbed by the darker tissue and destroys the darker pigment cells. These dead cells rise to the surface and slough off, leaving behind the lighter tissue.
IPL treatment for age spots is a gradual process. Traditional laser treatment would remove the age spots more quickly by destroying a large amount of tissue in one session, which is very painful and causes sever swelling.
Our IPL treatments are gentle and painless and therefore require several sessions. Typically age spots can be removed in three to five sessions, but each patient is unique and it is impossible to predict exactly how many sessions will be required to remove all of the dark tissue.
Cosmelan® Depigmentation Treatment
This is a chemical peel treatment using a combination of gentle, yet effective acids to sharply decrease the appearance of brown spots and melasma. The procedure is painless, but the product does need to stay on your face for several hours. Cosmelan® stands out as the best available non laser treatment of melasma and is a world wide standard of care for hyperpigmenting disorders.
