New and Improved Fraxel
Two weeks ago, we upgraded our Fraxel laser to the Fraxel II.
The advantages are:
* more energy -> more effective treatments.
* less painful treatments because there is less microscopic heat damage to skin tissue.
* less risk of hyperpigmentation and other side effects because the treatments are more precise.
More effective, safer and less painful treatments means that we will have better results for difficult to treat conditions like acne scars and fine lines. The other advantage is that patients will not need as many sessions to achieve the results they desire!
I attended a Cosmetic Dermatology conference at the beginning of November where the results from the upgraded Fraxel were demonstrated. It was very impressive.
We have treated about 10 patients so far with the new device and I have had nothing but encouraging feedback from Natalie and the other nurses using the machine, as well from the patients undergoing the treatments.
Hooray for progress!

Cellulite be gone!
After much hesitation and skepticism, I decided to go ahead and add cellulite reduction to the treatment menu at Westside Medical Spa. I hesitated because there is
a lot of hype about cellulite reduction devices, but I have not seen really dramatic results until now.
The device I chose is the Velasmooth from Syneron, and I will be putting up a page on this in the main menu of the website. In brief, Velasmooth uses radiofrequency energy and deep massage to disrupt the scar bands that give cellulite its bumpy appearance and smooth out the contour of the patient's skin. Velasmooth was FDA approved for non invasive cellulite reduction. Velasmooth came out with a new treatment head and the company has redesigned the machine so that it is more effective and causes less bruising and downtime. Also, with the new device, patients come in once a week, rather than the twice a week frequency required before.
The results from Velasmooth are good, but it is important to have realistic expectations. The cellulite will be smoothed but not completely gone. For a good idea of what to expect, the Velasmooth website provides good before and after photos. Generally, about 8 to 10 weekly treatments are recommended.
I am very much looking forward to having the Velasmooth in my practice!
