Non-Surgical Laser Skin Treatments

What Are Laser Treatments Used For?

Dr. Rivkin uses laser skin treatments for many conditions. He often finds that the results are superior to the use of topical creams, peels or surgical procedures. The main laser treatments offered at Westside Aesthetics target the following skin conditions:

What Is The Difference Between Fractionated And Traditional Laser Resurfacing?

Fractionated lasers such as the Fraxel laser and the Active FX CO2 laser are state-of-the-art laser devices that use microscopic columns of light to only destroy targeted areas of skin. Unlike traditional laser treatments, this leaves healthy surrounding cells unharmed while providing astonishing, natural looking results. The untouched healthy cells are integral to the recovery process. They aid in rapid healing and in reducing discomfort. By stimulating collagen production, the Fraxel and Active FX lasers effectively smooth out fine lines and acne scars and tighten the skin. Without targeting the entire outer layer of skin, as ablative laser resurfacing does, fractionated lasers avoid weeks of pain, redness, swelling, raw skin and downtime. These lasers were designed to provide the best of non-ablative lasers (less downtime) and ablative procedures (more significant results).

What Is The Difference Between Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) And Fraxel?

Fraxel targets microscopic areas, destroying all of the cells in the targeted area while leaving the surrounding healthy cells behind. Downtime for Fraxel treatments is around 3 days. IPL specifically targets red or brown skin cells, leaving the normal lighter cells unharmed. There is no downtime for IPL procedures. There is some mild redness for a few hours and brown spots look somewhat darker for a few days, but IPL has no real downtime associated with the treatment. We use Fraxel for skin texture improvement and IPL for elimination of brown spots and redness. While Fraxel is the more aggressive treatment, both stimulate collagen production while leaving healthy cells untouched. This allows for a speedy recovery – an important advantage over traditional laser treatments.

Which Laser Treatment Should I Use?

During your free initial consultation, Dr. Rivkin will evaluate your unique needs, explain all of the procedures we do in detail and help with any concerns you may have. Each laser is specialized for a particular type of treatment or a particular skin type. For example, acne scars can be improved with both the Fraxel Erbium laser and the Active FX CO2 laser, but for our Asian clients and for those with darker skin, we prefer to use the Fraxel laser. More sessions are necessary with the Fraxel, but the risk of pigmentation problems in this kind of skin is less with Fraxel and the results are often just as good. Caucasians, however, can benefit from the intensity of the Active FX laser to resolve their acne scars within one or two sessions, as opposed to the 4 or 5 sessions that the Fraxel requires.

Will Laser Treatments Burn My Skin?

Modern laser treatments work more gently and gradually than traditional treatments. The lasers used by Dr. Rivkin are minimally to non-ablative, devices of the highest quality. They carry far less risk of burning than traditional ablative laser methods. The laser treatments used at Westside Aesthetics are safe, mostly painless and require a minimum of significant recovery time.
