FAQ’s – Rosacea Treatment

How Is Rosacea Treated?

Because the signs and symptoms of rosacea vary from one patient to another, treatment must be tailored by a physician for each individual case.

When appropriate, treatments with intense pulsed light sources may be used to remove visible blood vessels and reduce extensive redness. The pulsed light targets the tiny blood vessels just under the skin which cause the flushing and redness of rosacea. The light energy passes through skin without damaging it and concentrates in the blood vessels, destroying them. We have seen excellent minimization of the redness of persistent rosacea as well as significant reduction in outbreaks following treatment with the Palomar Intense Pulsed Light System .

Is the Rosacea treatment painful?

We have seen little discomfort during treatment and minimal redness or swelling after treatment.

Is there down time or side effects?

Our patients are able to go back to work immediately after their brief procedure (no more than half an hour) and there are no long term or short-term side effects.

How many treatments do I need?

A series of five monthly treatments is usually necessary for the best outcome. We use a variety of prescription topical preparations when needed, to optimize results.

Is the treatment expensive?

A majority of insurance plans now recognize rosacea as a disease and not just a cosmetic condition. Therefore many of these plans will cover the treatment of rosacea.

What else should I know?

In addition to medical treatment, rosacea sufferers can improve their chances of maintaining remission by identifying and avoiding lifestyle and environmental factors that trigger rosacea flare-ups or aggravate their individual conditions. The National Rosacea Society offers a free Patient Diary Checklist to assist patients in identifying factors that may affect their individual cases, as well as a booklet called “Coping with Rosacea” that provides tips on lifestyle management.
