Eye bags can form due to numerous reasons. Seasonal allergies, diet, and sleeping position can all be temporary causes of puffiness below the eye. When eye bags are formed due to the accumulation of fat underneath the skin, they remain there permanently. Originally, these fat layers serve as cushions for the globe (eyeball) and help in preventing shock between the globe and the eye socket bone. As we age, skin loses firmness and elasticity and connective tissue and ligaments become weaker. The skin and connective tissue around our eyes is unable to keep the fat layers in their place. Fat begins to migrate toward the under eye area and forms visible eye bags. This is what we call psuedoherniation of the lower orbital fat pad.
Surgical methods for removing eye bags include lower eyelid surgery and fat repositioning surgery. In a traditional lower eyelid surgery, a small incision is made on the inside of the lower lid and excess tissue is removed to create a more youthful appearance. Currently, fat repositioning surgery has become more popular than standard fat excision. With fat repositioning surgery, the surgeon shifts the excess fat behind the connective ligaments of the eye and sutures it into place. Surgeries for eye bags are effective but are relatively expensive, require downtime and can result in complications. Complications include the possibility of infection as well as possible hollowing of the under eye area years after surgery. For those who would rather not go under the knife, consider Dr. Rivkin’s non-surgical alternative – the use of injectable fillers to fill out the hollowed area underneath the eyes that once contained fat.
The fillers that Dr. Rivkin uses to refill lost volume in the under eye area include Radiesse, Juvederm and Restylane. Radiesse is an injectable filler made from the same calcium that is in your teeth and bones. It has been FDA approved for over 10 years and has been demonstrated to be safe and effective over the years. Juvederm and Restylane are two types of hyaluronic acid fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a lubricating substance that is naturally found in the body. Hyaluronic acid has the ability to bind with water and thus contribute to a full, healthy, rejuvenated look. Injecting Juvederm or Restylane below the eye bags will cause them to appear less noticeable because it raises the skin below the bags. Having a smooth transition between the eye bags and the skin of the cheek makes the eye bags less obvious and eliminates the shadow that falls underneath the eye bags. Hyaluronic acid fillers can help smooth out the appearance of lines and wrinkles under the eyes as well. Dr. Rivkin will ensure you do not feel any pain during the few minutes in which he will use the fillers to help you look younger.
Injecting hyaluronic acid into each site will attract water to that area and fill out lines and crevices in the skin. Juvederm contains small amount of an anesthetic called licodaine, to minimize any discomfort during the procedure. The gel consistency of the injectable will ensure noticeable, yet natural-looking results that can last up to three years.
Restylane, which has been in the market for a long time, is another non-animal based hyaluronic acid filler and is compatible with the hyaluronic acid produced naturally by the body. Like Juvederm, Restylane also has the consistency of a gel and it fills out the hollows beneath the eye using the natural water-binding properties of hyaluronic acid. Restylane also has lidocaine.
