Ultherapy is one of the only effective ways to improve the appearance of deep wrinkles and loose skin naturally – it uses the power of your body’s natural processes to rejuvenate and restore your skin. Unlike radio frequency technologies, which have been utilized for many years, Ultherapy is able to more precisely target collagen fibers with ultrasound waves to provide deep heat that will stimulate contraction and skin tightening. Other non-invasive treatments are less effective because they rely on an even spread of electromagnetic waves. Not all areas of skin that form wrinkles are the same, thus it is necessary to target only the places where treatment is needed. Dr. Alexander Rivkin is highly experienced with cosmetic treatments and is proud to offer the Ultherapy technology in his Los Angeles office.
As mentioned above, Ultherapy (also known as Ulthera) uses ultrasonic waves to move through the skin surface without harming it. Once it reaches the targeted tissues of the dermis, it is focused down and provides a stimulating heat to the collagen fibers forcing them into contraction. Nearby dead or dying cells are eliminated, allowing the body to replace them with new cells. Ultherapy is FDA approved and safe to use on virtually all skin types. Procedures typically last about one hour, and it is perfectly safe to receive additional touch-ups as necessary. Many patients have reported that their results have lasted several years. Although results are subtle, and not as dramatic as a surgical face lift, Ulthera works well for those patients who are not yet ready for a surgical lift, or are too young. Patients who are just beginning to see early jowl formation and loss of jawline definition are particularly good candidates.
Dr. Rivkin’s philosophy is that patients should exhaust their non surgical options before they go under the knife. Surgical procedures like face lifts are temporary – they are effective for about 10 years. After that, revision treatment is risky and results are less predictable due to the scar formation generated by the first procedure. We are fortunate to have a variety of non surgical treatments at our disposal, so he believes that as long as skin laxity is minor, treatments like Ultherapy should be used, not surgical face lift.
The full effects of Ultherapy may take a few months to be seen due to the gradual nature of healing and collagen production; however, some visible results can be seen quickly thanks to the immediate effects of protein denaturation and fiber contraction. During the treatment, patients may feel some discomfort from the heat, but this is easily managed with medications such as Vicodin and Xanax as well as our powerful topical anesthetic creams. There will be no damage done to the superficial layers of skin. Be sure to tell Dr. Rivkin if you are particularly sensitive to pain.
There is no downtime after the Ultherapy treatment, so you do not have to worry about missing work or important events. There may be some slight redness or tingling post-treatment, but these sensations fade quickly as the body adjusts to the new tightness of the skin. For areas such as the cheeks or neck that are most affected by gravity’s forces, Ulthera has quickly become a gold standard in safety and efficacy.
