Westside Aesthetics works hard to remain innovative and at the forefront of aesthetics and cosmetic surgery research while maintaining the highest industry standards. Our studies are conducted in pursuit of advancing the field of medicine in regards to aesthetics while optimizing our patient’s appearance in the process. Eligible trial participants may receive treatments and even additional compensation for their participation provided they participate fully in all necessary observation periods, reporting sessions with the doctors, etc. for the duration of the study.
Participating in a clinical trial is very similar to coming in for a treatment with Dr. Rivkin. Participants will meet with the coordinator and Dr. Rivkin to determine whether they are eligible to participate in the trial, which may require photos or additional evaluations. Once enrolled, participants come in to receive their treatment, or medications depending on the study. In order to monitor the results, participants are asked to return for follow-up appointments on a specific schedule. In many cases, clinical trial sponsors often provide participants with compensation for their time.
If you are interested in participating in one of our exciting clinical research studies, please call us at 310-443-5273 or submit the form here to provide us with your information and a member of our research team will contact you shortly.
Every clinical trial must be approved and monitored by an Institutional Review Board (IRB) to make sure the risks are as low as possible and are worth any potential benefits.
IRBs includes doctors, nurses, statisticians, community advocates, and others who make sure that each clinical trial is ethical and that your rights are protected. By federal regulation, all trials involving biomedical research must be IRB approved and the IRB will periodically review the research trial to ensure your safety.
All the trials conducted at Westside Aesthetics are IRB approved, and therefore we are mandated to follow a careful plan, called a protocol, that describes exactly what will happen during the study. You will know the full details of the trial protocol prior to enrolling into any clinical trial.
All clinical trials have specific guidelines to determine who can participate. These are called eligibility criteria. The factors that allow you to participate in a clinical trial can include but are not limited to: age, gender, presence of condition being studied or corrected, previous treatment history, and other medical conditions. Following the trial’s eligibility criteria helps us keep you safe and ensures that the data collected is consistent and valuable.
A clinical trial can sometimes require more time and medical attention than normal care. This can include doctor visits, phone calls, more treatments, or a more complicated treatment regimen. All possible risks will be discussed with you prior to enrolling in any trials.
The treatment offered in a trial might not work. Trials are often done in order to determine if a treatment works or how well it works, therefore there is a chance it may not work. Often the products and treatments studied in the trials at Westside Aesthetics have been studied in previous trials, and we can provide you with all that information prior to enrolling.
The treatment offered in a trial might cause some side effects. The trials offered at Westside Aesthetics are usually studied in previous trials before coming to us, so we are well informed of the possible side effects, and we will discuss them with you in detail prior to enrolling. However just like any treatment, how other participants react to a treatment may be different than how you would react.
By participating in a clinical trial, you may get access to the most advanced treatments that may be otherwise unavailable. You may gain access to new medications and new treatments, sometimes years before they are widely available.
You will be monitored very closely in a study for any potential side effects.
You will be making a valuable contribution to advancing medicine. You’ll also play a part in helping to determine benefits for future patients.
A placebo is a substance that has no therapeutic effect. Many people think that clinical trials involve placebos, but that is not true. If a placebo is part of the trial you’re considering, you will be fully informed of that fact ahead of time, and the chances of getting placebo. Often it is not just 50/50, but sometimes only 25-33% of those participating in the trial get placebo, and even then many studies provide treatment at the end to those who received placebo. If the study you are interested in involves placebo, please understand that it is not up to Dr. Rivkin or the study team to determine who gets placebo and who gets treatment. It is completely randomized by a third party, and we may not even know what you are assigned to.
Every trial is different, but the clinical trial’s sponsor usually pays for all research-related costs and any special testing. Patients generally do not have to pay out-of-pocket costs for treatments studied as part of a trial. Before you join a clinical trial, you will receive an informed consent document that explains exactly if there are any required payments for the trial.
Participants may be compensated for their time and, in some instances, for the inconvenience of a procedure. Every study is different, compensation can be in the form of a check, credit to use at Westside Aesthetics, and/or parking benefits. A research team member will discuss with you the specifics of compensation for the specific trial you may be interested in.
